While you were away
Come back to a chat after a few minutes away and Claude sums up where it stands and what's next, above the message box. The recap isn't added to the conversation; Ask follows it up in a side chat.

Good to know
Section titled “Good to know”Catch up gets the long version
Catch up asks a side chat for the big picture, what just got done, what’s in progress and any open decision, with Claude’s pick. A /catch-up skill of your own runs instead. Ask and Catch up both replace your earlier side chat with a new one.
Five minutes out of sight counts as away
Five minutes on another tab, another project or another app counts. No recap comes while Claude works, with a draft in the box, in a short chat or one barely changed since the last recap, or after nearly an hour idle, when reading the whole chat again costs full price.
A long chat gone cold is compacted first
Send a message to a chat over 200k tokens that has sat for an hour and it’s compacted first, which costs less than Claude re-reading it all and keeps later turns small. Your message waits a minute or two; Esc in the first few seconds sends it as it is.
Dismiss one, or switch them off
✕ puts a recap away; it’s never saved. Settings ▸ Chat ▸ When you come back has a switch for each: Recap what you missed and Compact a long chat first. Both are on by default.
